DYLAN BERNSTEIN

Authorised Level 2

4th - 18th FEB

Dylan had the good fortune to be introduced to yoga and zazen meditation in 1988. Since then, he has called upon the practices to engage the body, still the mind and seek more subtle expressions of self.

Dylan's curiosity has always been sparked by both ancient philosophy and living civilizations. During one of the years in India, Dylan was introduced to Ashtanga Vinyasa and trained to teach. He has taught Mysore-style, led classes, workshops, retreats and trained teachers worldwide.

Dylan continues to study yoga and related subjects as well as practicing under the eyes of Ashtanga's more venerable teachers, including Shri K. Pattabhi, Saraswati and Sharath Jois.

Ashtanga Vinyasa coupled with pranayama and other sitting practices continue to be the foundations of his understanding and teachings.

Workshop 1: The Ancient Art of Vinyasa 9:00-11:30

We have all heard the word so much, we might think we already know what vinyasa means. Yet can we discover a more exact definition? And more importantly, can we discover a practice method that is truly sustainable and beneficial? For Dylan, the art of vinyasa is all about the truly ancient arts of bandha and breath. We'll explore breath-based methods for practicing asana from the inside-out, from standing postures to jumping back and through. This transformation will be of incredible value for practitioners of any yoga asana, from Ashtanga purists to wildly creative Flow people to mellow Hatha traditionalists. All are welcome!

Workshop 2: Alternatives to Alignment 13:30-16:00

The A-word has become something of a gospel. Many orthodox practitioners of all styles look for lines visible from the outside. Dylan is most concerned with internal practice. Shouldn't we be asking ourselves how does that feel as opposed to how does that look? Let's check out the most effective ways to set up postures. Obviously, we know some techniques to avoid injury and open up advancing asana. But let's also look at plenty of alternative approaches! We'll consider body type, injury, preference and anything else that might serve to build a more beneficial practice. Certainly some fundamental standing asana will be explored as well as backbends. Participants are highly encouraged to ask about any asana that is interesting, troublesome or elusive for them. Teachers are always welcome and this workshop is absolutely open to all. Various styles, different lineages and orthodoxies will all have something to share. If there is interest, we may even explore some assists and adjustments. Expect detailed revision of postures, experimentation and discussion.

SUNDAY 12 FEB - Workshops 3 & 4 (In Hout Bay)

Workshop 3: Balancing Postures: Bandha, Buddha and Balance 9:00-11:30

Whether upside-down or out on a limb, how can we find calm? Looking for the centre, the eye of the hurricane might reveal our core, our deepest truth... The Bandha so revered by Krishnamacharya, the Emptiness so appreciated by Buddha. This workshop will feature core work and balance poses, as well as moments of stillness.

Workshop 4: Backbends & Dropbacks: Strength and Safety13:30-16:00

Learn and practice safe techniques for deepening your backbend practice. Everyone can learn the approach to dropbacks, even if you aren't ready to go all the way to the floor. Injuries will be discussed, avoided and rehabilitated. Open to all.
